MacBook Air M2 13″ backlight issue solved

The surprising tun of events and how we used 16″ MacBook Pro to fix 13″ MacBook Air backlight issue.

Story starts with the customer of course. They presented the liquid damaged MacBook Air to our store. The technician cleaned the liquid damage and managed to safely power on the MacBook. MacBook booted but the backlight of the display stayed off. The LCD image was just visible but no backlight.

The first diagnosis was failed display due to liquid damage but new display showed no backlight either.

Logic board damage was concluded, communicated to customer and we got a go ahead for the repair.

Microscope revealed the cause of the problem. Unfortunately, bot the LCD connector on the display and LCD connector on the board were damaged.

We did not have a spare A2681 LCD connector in stock but the technician realised that the power connector from MacBook Pro A2141 and LCD connector from an MacBook Air A2681 are the same and can be interchanged. The donor dead logic board for A2141 was located and the USB-C power board.

After the connectors were transferred from the donor board and the donor flex, the MacBook Air backlight was back on! Lucky repair, we had all the required parts so the cost was reduced and the only time we had to charge for was the technicians time. All in all good outcome, much more economic than buying a new MacBook.

P.S. Apple won’t touch liquid damaged devices but in most cases these devices can be repaired and will function without issues if properly cleaned and liquid damaged components replaced.
