Toyota Electric Power Steering Unit Repair at Device Repair Guy

At Device Repair Guy, we carry out component-level repair of Toyota electric power steering units rather than defaulting straight to full module replacement. The unit shown here is a Toyota 89650-12340 electric power steering module with JTEKT, Denso, and EPS12V markings, making it a good example of the type of EPS control unit we inspect and repair in-house.

In-House Diagnosis of EPS Control Unit Faults

When a power steering unit comes in, our first step is careful internal inspection. We open the module, assess the board condition, and inspect the suspected failure area under magnification at the bench. One of the photos shows the board being examined under a microscope in our workshop, which is part of how we approach accurate diagnosis instead of guessing or replacing parts blindly.

Relay position on the board

This kind of electric power steering repair is all about understanding the board layout, access limitations, and which components can realistically be serviced without creating unnecessary risk.

The Relay We Can Access and Replace

In this Toyota EPS module, one of the key components visible in the photos is the relay marked C811-T-C-12 / AGB36101. That relay is accessible enough to be identified and worked on as part of a targeted repair strategy.

The faulty relay

Rather than treating the whole module as disposable, we focus on the actual fault area and perform repairs at board level where practical. This is one of the major differences between specialist electronic repair and simple unit swapping.

Why the Other Two Relays Are Much Harder to Replace

There are two other relays inside this power steering unit, but replacing them is much more difficult.

The reason is the board construction. To reach those relays properly, the board would have to be removed from the housing. That is not a simple lift-out job, because the underside of the board is tied into the power stage and heatsink arrangement. The photo of the unit internals shows how tightly the board is packaged above the larger power components, while the underside photo shows the area where the board hardware is constrained by the mounting design.

In practice, removing the board would require unsoldering an array of transistors/power devices, and those parts are also screwed to the heatsink. They cannot be accessed properly any other way. That means deeper relay replacement is a far more invasive process, with significantly more labour and a higher level of risk than replacing the accessible relay shown in the close-up photo.

Why This Matters in Power Steering Module Repair

This is exactly why proper Toyota power steering module repair is not just about replacing every visible part. A good repairer needs to understand what can be serviced safely, what requires major disassembly, and when extra board disturbance may do more harm than good.

At DRG, our approach is practical and honest:

  • we inspect the unit in-house
  • we identify accessible fault points
  • we carry out relay and board-level repair where it makes sense
  • we explain when deeper component access requires major disassembly

That gives customers a more realistic assessment of the repair, rather than a vague promise or an unnecessary full replacement.

Component-Level Toyota EPS Repair at DRG

For customers with a faulty Toyota electric power steering unit, component-level repair can often be the best path when the problem is isolated to serviceable electronic components. The module shown here demonstrates exactly the kind of engineering challenge we deal with: an accessible relay that can be repaired directly, plus two additional relays that would require removal of the board, unsoldering multiple transistors, and separating devices that are fixed to the heatsink underneath.

That is the difference between basic parts swapping and proper electronics repair.

If your vehicle has an electric power steering module fault, Device Repair Guy can inspect the unit and advise on the most practical repair option.

Feedback from customer for this particular repair:
“The mechanic put the electronic power steering unit back in the car yesterday and it worked perfectly =-) Thank you to you and the team for working through this issue.

The EPS warning light on the dash disappeared straight away and power steering was restored. I was able to drive the car home last night.

The mechanic thought it was a great result and he was keen to know where I went. I passed on your store’s business card as he was glad to be aware of the Device Repair Guy for the future.

Thank you again,
Mark”
